Phenix City Crime Database Integration to GIS
BKI developed a data transfer process to obtain periodic crime information updates from the Police Department’s criminal database. This included documenting the existing data structure to determine the source of required information for analysis, developing the export process from the UNIX-based database system to a relational database, and developing the linking process from the relational database table to the GIS data. GIS data was produced directly from the extracted crime database information by geocoding addresses related to each crime incident. This allowed the Police department to easily visualize trends for different types of crimes by geographic location.
