NGSB CSAII Outfitting Building and Crane

Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, CSAII Outfitting Building and Crane

Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding (NGSB-GC) contracted Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. to provide a master plan, construction plans and specifications, construction administration and resident inspection for expansion of their West Bank Production Facility for the cruise ship fabrication platform. The project included a 150,000-sf CSA II Building with 200-ton and 150-ton cranes, a 116,000-sf Blast/Paint Hall, a Panel Shop with a 100-ton crane, and the 250,000-sf CSA Outfitting Building with a 30-ton crane.

The project also included new sheetpile bulkheads, relocation of the existing carpentry building, new gantry crane rails for production crews, a new ramp for launching the offshore platforms after landside assembly was complete, and dredging and filling to create approximately 14 acres of new land surface and to improve approximately 13 acres of existing land. The project also included dredging a new dry dock pit. BKI assisted with preparing the mitigation and environmental permits necessary to secure construction permits from state regulatory agencies and the US Army Corps of Engineers for the shipyard expansion, including conducting an environmental assessment and a wetlands delineation.

BKI created detailed shop drawings for structural members for the CSA II building.  These are major members, such as columns, crane girders, and box girders, which were designed as built-up members with enlarged base plates.  BKI detailed these members so that NGSB-GC could fabricate them from plate steel. The detailing included exact dimensioning, bolt hole locations and weld sizes and locations for these members.
