Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc.
(BKI) was retained by the St. Bernard Port,
Harbor, and Terminal District to design a
tour boat docking facility on the
Mississippi River at the U.S.
Park Service's Chalmette National Monument,
the site of the historic Battle of New
Orleans.
The docking facility had to
be able to adjust to significant changes in water
level of the Mississippi River. Because the site
had also been planned for levee improvements by the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), BKI had to
coordinate the interests of the COE, the Park
Service, the tour boat operator, and the St.
Bernard Port Commission.
BKI's design for a floating
dock system integrated the COE's site improvements
and the desired access features requested by the
tour boat line and the National Park Service. In
order to provide immediate docking services, the
dock was built in two stages. The first phase was
installed after the COE completed revetment work,
the second phase was constructed upon the COE's
completion of the levee setback work. BKI scheduled
the project to minimize down time.
