Queen City Master Plan

The City of Tuscaloosa engaged Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. to develop a master plan for the preservation and re-use of the historic Queen City Park Bathhouse and Pool and the surrounding park on the Black Warrior River.

The Queen City Bathhouse and Pool is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was designed in 1941 by local architect Don Buel Schuyler, an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright. Due to deterioration, the Art Deco facility is no longer used.

BKI recommended the city use the bathhouse as an information center and museum and place a smaller exercise pool in the existing pool and grandstands. For the park site, the firm suggested the city restore historic stone bridges and shelters and create paths to link the riverfront to adjacent areas.

The cost to renovate all facilities is estimated at $3.8 million.
