The City of Northport in northern Tuscaloosa
County, Alabama, retained Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. as
the primary planning consultant for preparation of
the city’s comprehensive plan.
One of BKI’s responsibilities was to review general
land use as part of an overall comprehensive plan
for the community. BKI analyzed existing development
patterns and trends, population changes, and
terrain-related development constraints. Before and
during the development of the draft land use plan,
BKI conducted community-based information meetings
to obtain public input.
The final plan was designed to prepare for projected
population growth and to create complementary cores
of intense commercial and residential development
oriented to existing and proposed transportation
corridors and development centers. The plan also
identified ways in which the current zoning
ordinance and the development review process needed
to be updated for the city to enact the recommended
plan.
