BURK-KLEINPETER, INC. was retained
by LSU Medical Center (LSUMC), located in the New
Orleans Regional Medical Center complex, to analyze
parking problems and recommend improvements. The
study documented current conditions in the Medical
Center's off-street parking facilities and on-street
areas.
The firm observed traffic circulation, facility use,
and pedestrian traffic patterns. BKI staff used
as-built drawings, aerial photos and plans of the
facilities to evaluate alternative parking
arrangements.
The objectives were to increase the number of
patient spaces, reallocate spaces throughout the
facility, meet requirements for the number of
handicapped accessible spaces and develop a pavement
marking system for pedestrian crossings. Another
task was to evaluate interior ambient lighting. BKI
also reviewed the directional signage to reduce
conflicting exterior and interior signage. A series
of signage standards were developed.
