Jefferson Parish Lakefront Linear Park Master Plan

Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. was selected by Jefferson Parish to develop a Master Plan for a continuous 10-mile bikeway and trail system along the southern shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain.

In an effort to improve safety, increase recreational opportunities, and reduce maintenance costs in the vulnerable shoreline area, Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. (BKI )was selected to design the implementation of improvements to the Linear Park along the southern shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain.

BKI created the master plan for this 10.2-mile project; applied for grants and permits; designed the parks themselves, including construction plans and specifications; and provided construction administration and resident inspection.

The 10.2-mile long Linear Park improvements were divided into phases to accomodate available funding. Improvements include replacing the existing 10-foot wide path with new 10-foot wide bicycle and 6-foot wide pedestrian paths on higher ground. The new path locations and the separation of users make the path safer and reduce damage from wave-wash. BKI is also designing park amenities, including shelters, play areas, benches, picnic tables, drinking fountains, and tree plantings.

A total of 2.7 miles ($1.8 million construction cost) of path improvements are complete, and an additional 4.4 miles ($2.8 million estimated construction) are funded and being designed. The remaining 3.1 miles of paths ($2.0 million estimated construction) and the park amenities ($2.0 million estimated construction) are currently in line for funding.
