Canal Street Corridor Light Rail Major Investment Analysis

Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. was retained by the Regional Transit Authority to analyze the feasibility of re-establishing streetcar (light rail) service in the Canal Street Corridor. This spinal transportation corridor links outlying residential neighborhoods with other high ridership transit lines, downtown employment centers, convention and entertainment areas.

The project consisted of a Systems Plan Update, Alternatives Analysis (AA) and Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) that were performed according to Federal Transit Administration guidelines. The process evaluated several alternative light-rail transit routes serving the New Orleans Central Business District and included location and conceptual design of park-and-ride lots, operation and maintenance facilities, and multi-modal transit terminals.

Stakeholder and public meetings were held within the corridor in order to incorporate community input.
