Old Metairie Railroad Crossing Control Demonstration Study

Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. was retained by Jefferson Parish to analyze eight railroad grade crossings in the densely populated Old Metairie area as part of an effort to improve safety and decrease locomotive horn noise.

The Norfolk Southern Railroad operates approximately 24 trains per day in this "Back Belt" corridor that connects the Huey P. Long gateway bridge over the Mississippi River with tracks east of New Orleans. The Parish sought to provide a series of grade crossings which comply with the safety requirements improvements necessary to obtain a Federal Railroad Administration-approved quiet zone.

In conducting research for the study, BKI anticipated new regulations that the FRA has proposed which will require that crossing safety be improved. The study summarized findings of previous studies, performed field observations, identified and evaluated alternative vehicle crossing controls and developed conceptual solutions and preliminary cost estimates for individual crossings
