BKI
was selected as one of four engineering
design firms to work on the project. Our
assignment consisted of the preparation of
both preliminary and final construction
plans and geometrics for the structure and
interchanges from Wayne Boulevard to Ames
Boulevard.
This
portion of the 52 foot wide elevated twin
expressway covered a distance of 2.5 miles
and included sixteen entrance and exist
ramps.
Comprehensive
use of the unique architecturally designed
concrete piers, which support the precast
trapezoidal box beam superstructure, give
the new expressway its distinctive
appearance. The ten feet of overhung pier
cap caused complex combined torsional and
bending stresses on the pier column and
cap. Computer analysis of the Y-shaped
piers using the sophisticated STRUDL
program, determined the need of the high
strength concrete for these heavily loaded
columns.
