BURK-KLEINPETER, INC. (BKI) was selected by the
City of Kenner to design a new 5 MGD (million
gallons per day) wastewater treatment plant,
effluent pump station and force main.
The project was partially funded under the EPA Water
and Sewer Grants program. BKI assisted the City in
managing its application efforts and the subsequent
implementation of the project. The need for this
expansion to the City’s wastewater treatment
capacity had been identified under an EPA sponsored
201Facilities Plan, performed earlier by BKI. The
proposed treatment capacity expansion was part of
the required actions to address issues between the
City and the EPA under an existitng consent decree.
The BKI team provided preliminary and final plans
and specifications, drafting, construction
administration and resident inspection services for
the design and construction of the wastewater
treatment plant, and the related effluent pump
station and effluent force main which discharges
into the Mississippi River.
BKI also assisted the City in obtaining additional
funds during the construction phase to install belt
presses for sludge processing in lieu of sludge
drying beds which were part of the original design.
The total construction cost for this project was
$12.5 million.
