Burk-Kleinpeter,
Inc. (BKI) provided design, construction
administration and inspection services for
the expansion of a water treatment
facility for the Parish of Jefferson. The
plant capacity was expanded by 34 MGD for
a total of 70 MGD.
Since physical space
was available, the expansion consisted of
adding a third plant to complement the two
existing plants. The new plant uses a
conventional treatment process employing
precipitation with a chemical flocculant,
rapid sand filtration, and disinfection
with chlorine. In addition to the basins
and structures for the treatment units,
the expansion included an expansion of the
raw water intake facility, a new
laboratory building, a new 5 million
gallon, pre-stressed concrete ground
storage tank, and a new emergency power
generating system with the capacity to
handle the needs of the entire plant.
BKI also provided
modifications to the plant during
operation, including conversion from a dry
to a liquid chemical feed system, a
pretreatment chemical injection unit, and
renovations to administrative offices and
a storage building.
Construction cost
was approximately $5.2 million.
