Burk-Kleinpeter,
Inc. (BKI) was selected by the City of Houston to
provide construction supervision and management services for
40,000 LF of neighborhood streets near Spring Branch, Texas. The
area includes churches, residential property and retail centers.
The two-lane asphalt/open-ditch roadways were transformed into a
44-foot wide urban section that met "Neighborhood to Standard"
criteria.
Because of its location, inspectors were required to maintain a
heightened level of construction safety, ensuring that there
were no impediments to vehicular or pedestrian mobility and to
monitor utility service shut-offs, noise levels, and site
cleanliness. The team also had to contend with unforeseen
hazards, including the outbreak of the West Nile Virus. A case
was confirmed near the project area. The team reacted quickly,
chlorinating all inlets under construction, all areas of ponding
water, and any other places where mosquitoes could breed.
The project required special shut down procedures during
non-working, weekend hours. Barricades, safety devices, steel
roadway plates, fencing, and temporary traffic control features
were installed to avoid vandalism during these periods.
The cost of this project was approximately $8.5 million. |
