To improve drainage outfall for the Jefferson
Highway community between Shrewesbury Road and the
Orleans Parish line, Jefferson Parish contracted
Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. to design drainage channel
improvements for Hoey's Canal from the Highway Ditch
to north of the Earhart Expressway.
BKI designed 2,400 linear feet of concrete flume to
allow drainage to flow through the canal at 1,500
cubic feet per second. In order to have an efficient
hydraulic channel section, the flume was designed
with a U-shaped, cast-in-place, concrete bottom and
concrete, slope-paved sides.
The firm redesigned several railroad trestle
crossings and steel sheetpile bulkheads adjacent to
the Shell Oil Company tank farm. During the
construction phase, BKI provided construction
administration and full-time resident inspection
services.
The construction cost was approximately $2.8
million.
