In an effort
to improve the drainage capability of the
Governor Hall Canal, the City of Gretna
contracted Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. to design
improvements along the .75-mile length of
the canal.
BKI designed a
concrete slope-paved trapezoidal channel
with new concrete-arch culverts at Gretna
Boulevard and at Smithway Drive. The two
roadway crossings are precast
concrete-arch span structures measuring 8
feet high by 24 feet wide. The firm
designed the roadways that cross the canal
to allow runoff from a ten-year storm to
flow under the roadways.
BKI's use of the
precast concrete culverts allowed
construction to proceed quickly with
minimal disruptions to the traffic on
Governor Hall Boulevard, one of Gretna's
major traffic arteries. In addition to the
design services, BKI provided construction
administration and resident
inspection.
Construction cost
was approximately $1.5 million.
