Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc.
(BKI) was contracted by the St. Bernard
Sewer District No. 1 to design the
conversion of an Imhoff tank treatment
process into a one-million gallon a day
activated sludge treatment
plant.
Treatment units
added to the plant included a grit removal
chamber, mechanical aeration basins,
clarifiers and a chlorine contact chamber.
The existing Imhoff tank structure was
converted to an aerobic sludge
digester.
Since the treatment
plant is located on the Chalmette
Battlefied National Monument, design and
construction were carried out in a manner
that was sensitive to the daily presence
of visitors to the monument.
The construction
cost of the project was approximately $2
million.
