Burk-Kleinpeter,
Inc. (BKI) was retained to design a new 3,400-
cubic foot per second (CFS) drainage pump
station located on the Elmwood Canal at
Lake Pontchartrain.
The project involved
the design of concrete sump and pile
supported pump foundation, steel grate
trash racks, six 550-CFS diesel-powered
vertical-lift storm water pumps, two
50-CFS constant-duty electric drive pumps,
right-angle gears, discharge tubes, and
pump house superstructure. The
superstructure included an overhead
traveling crane, a fuel supply system, an
emergency power generator, concrete
floodwalls and levees, and construction
cofferdams. The design of the pump station
structure included an analysis of lateral
loads on floodwalls resulting from storm
surges and hurricane velocity wind
conditions.
BKI provided
construction administration and full-time
resident inspection services during the
construction phase.
The construction
cost was approximately $15
million.
