Burk-Kleinpeter,
Inc. (BKI) was contracted by the Jefferson
Parish Council to design and provide
construction administration for a new
4,600-CFS storm drainage pumping station
on Duncan Canal at the Lake Pontchartrain
levee in Kenner, LA.
BKI designed the
concrete sump and pile-supported pump
foundation; steel-grate trash racks and
screen cleaners; four 1000-CFS
diesel-powered horizontal pumps; two
300-CFS direct-drive electric-powered
vertical-lift storm water pumps; formed
concrete discharge tubes; and the pump
house superstructure, including an
overhead traveling crane, a diesel fuel
storage system, a vacuum pump priming
system, emergency generators, and concrete
floodwalls and levees. As part of the
design process, BKI's engineers analyzed
lateral loads on floodwalls from storm
surges and on the pump station structure
from hurricane velocity winds. BKI also
provided construction administration and
full-time resident inspection services
during construction.
Construction cost
was approximately $25 million.
