The City of Slidell’s main stormwater drainage artery, the W-14 canal, was frequently reaching capacity and becoming overburdened. In order to reduce the excess flow, the City of Slidell contracted Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. to design two new storm water detention ponds. In order to construct the West Diversion Detention Pond, 13.5 acres of wooded land was cleared and 92,000 cubic yards of earth was excavated. This pond holds 20.46 million gallons of excess flow from the W-14 Canal and diverts this water into the Bayou Vincent/Bayou Bonfouca drainage system. The pond outflow releases a flow equivalent to the capacity of the West Diversion Canal while detaining excess water. Design included a 117” x 79” corrugated-metal arch pipe outfall structure, a concrete slope-paved revetment, and a 5,500 cubic yard embankment berm. In the center of Slidell, a 20-acre site was cleared to excavate 250,000 cubic yards of earth for the construction of the Robert Road Detention Pond. BKI designed this pond to hold a capacity of 35.84 million gallons. A 17,500 cubic yard embankment berm was included in the design. The design of both ponds included site preparation, access road construction, and security fencing. The construction cost was approximately $1.5 million.
