Brown Avenue Canal Improvements

As part of its efforts to control flooding in Southeast Louisiana, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District selected Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. to design drainage channel improvements to the Brown Avenue Canal between Harold Street and Gardere Canal in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, a distance of approximately half a mile.

BKI designed the concrete slope paving of the canal banks, including a transition at Harold Street from the slope paving to a box culvert. Drop inlets were installed along the canal banks to catch runoff with 24" PVC pipe running from the new drain inlets to the canal. The existing drain pipes that emptied into the canal were modified to tie into the side slopes of the concrete slope paving.

The utility crossing located between Florence Street and Sidney Street was relocated 50 feet south of the old crossing. The new crossing required the driving of 30-foot precast concrete piles.

BKI also provided engineering support services to ensure that the improvements were constructed in accordance with the plans and specifications.
