Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc.
(BKI) designed and provided construction
administration for a new 3,600 cubic feet
per second (CFS) storm drainage pumping
station located on the Bonnabel Canal at
the Lake Pontchartrain levee in Jefferson
Parish.
The design included
concrete sump and pile supported pump
foundation, steel grate trash racks and
screen cleaners, three diesel-powered
horizontal pumps (1,000-CFS each), two
direct drive electric-powered
vertical-lift storm water pumps (300-CFS
each), and formed concrete discharge
tubes. The pump house superstructure
included an overhead traveling crane,
diesel fuel storage system, vacuum pump
priming system, emergency generators,
concrete floodwalls, and levees.
The design of the
pump station included an analysis of
lateral loads on floodwalls resulting from
storm surges and hurricane velocity wind
conditions. BKI also conducted a hydraulic
model study of the intake basin to insure
adequate flow distribution across the bar
screen to each of the five pump
bays.
