Arabi Terminal Dock No.1 Renovation

BURK-KLEINPETER, INC. (BKI) was contracted by the St. Bernard Port, Harbor & Terminal District to design and provide construction administration for the repair, rehabilitation, and renovation of Dock Number 1 at the Chalmette Slip. The 90-year-old warehouse and dock apron needed updating to meet modern port requirements and to ease cargo-handling operations.

BKI increased the load-carrying capacity of the dock apron and warehouse floor from 450-psf to 1,000-psf by designing a new foundation and deck system to meet modern port requirements, widened the dock apron from 20 feet to 60 feet for better material handling, and replaced the old transit shed with a new warehouse facility on the dock apron for covered storage of cargo with a rail siding adjacent to the warehouse for loading general cargo into rail cars.

BKI assisted in obtaining all necessary permits from the Corps of Engineers and other regulatory agencies. BKI also prepared the Ports Construction Development Priority Program application that resulted in the Port being awarded $3 million in funds toward the $12 million construction cost.
