Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. (BKI) was contracted by the New Orleans
Sewerage & Water Board to provide
design and construction administration,
including resident inspection, for the
expansion of the Algiers Wastewater
Treatment plant.
BKI designed a
new 50-million gallon a day effluent
pumping station and force main that
discharges into the Mississippi River. The
expansion included a new headworks
facility, primary and secondary
clarifiers, and a trickling filter to
effectively handle the peak flow into the
existing plant during periods of heavy
infiltration. The discharge system
includes a sheetpile dolphin system to
protect the piping in the Mississippi
River from potential damage from passing
ships. The headworks facility consists of
a pile-supported, reinforced concrete
structure with automatic climber screen
trash rakes and stainless steel sluice
gates. The primary clarifier is a
120'-diameter pile-supported, reinforced
concrete tank.
Construction
cost was approximately $30
million.
