Burk-Kleinpeter, Inc. (BKI) was selected by the
City of Houston to perform construction supervision
and management services for construction projects on
major thoroughfares near the Galleria Mall. The area
includes a church, residential property, retail
centers, and schools. The existing four-lane median
urban roadway was transformed into a 6-lane median
thoroughfare to accommodate high traffic volume.
Because of its location, inspectors were required to
maintain a heightened level of construction safety,
ensuring that all potential hazards were avoided or
properly blocked off and that there were no
impediments to vehicular or pedestrian mobility. BKI
was also responsible for traffic speed limits,
utility service shut-offs, noise levels, and site
cleanliness.
The project location necessitated special shut down
procedures during non-working weekend hours.
Barricades, safety devices, steel roadway plates,
safety fencing, and temporary traffic control
features, were installed to avoid vandalism during
these periods.
The competitive bid process required the
construction manager to monitor all documentation
and project controls. BKI’s Quality Control
personnel reviewed daily reports and logs and
scrutinized pay requests for quantity verifications
and 405 form line item applicability
