Burk-Kleinpeter,
Inc. was selected by the City of
Tuscaloosa for design and construction
administration services for a two-lane
bridge over the Kansas City Southern
railroad to replace the existing timber
structure which was deteriorating and did
not meet current specifications.
The design
included an 81-foot center span in order
to eliminate the need for crashwalls at
the interior pier locations. The design
also provides a sidewalk along one side of
the road for the length of the project
from First Place East to First Street
NE.
Structural design
included a superstructure composed of two
27-foot reinforced concrete slab spans and
one 81-foot conventional AASHTO concrete
girder span with a straight deck. The
substructure consisted of reinforced
concrete bents founded on steel H-piles.
This project also had limited clearance
requirements established by the
railroad.
Estimated
construction cost for this project is
$450,000.
